Barclay Samson is proud to show this is on-line selling exhibition of original vintage posters of Brittany in France. These posters illustrate a Brittany of the past. They date from the 1900’s to the 1950’s and show how we would have travelled, dressed, places we would be enticed to visit, our habits. They are a reflection of a bygone life much like present day posters illustrate our wants and needs of today.
By the end of the 19th Century the phenomenon of the second industrial revolution had had its full effect with a result that the railway system was expanding rapidly all over Europe and manufacturing was booming and changing the lives of everyone. An immediate side effect was advertising and in those days before television and the radio the poster was the main vehicle to promote.
In this on-line selling exhibition are examples of the use of the poster by various railway companies such as “Chemins de fer de l’Ouest”, “Chemins de fer de Paris à Orléans”, “Chemins de fer de l’Etat”, the “SNCF” as well as manufacturing, “Crêpes à dentelles Tanguy” or the Quiberon’s local authorities promoting loans for real-estate.
I hope you will enjoy this “virtual” trip around the beauty of Brittany and should you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
